“The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it” (Mark Weiser, Xerox Park, 1991)

Ambient Intelligence: vision

With the term ambient intelligence a vision is indicated. In this vision environments are aware of the presence of persons, their behaviour, or even their intentions, and thus of a certain situation, and are able to react on that. Ambient intelligence is the concept of a widely present technology embedded in our daily lives. At the same time this technology is not visible, but embedded in everyday objects such as mobile phones, household appliances and TV sets. Read more about what ambient intelligence is.

With respect to smart appliances, in the past much attention has been paid to technology, such as sensors and embedded software systems. A widening will take place towards intelligence, reasoning and emotion, in which the user (employee or customer) is at the heart. Systems that learn on a short or longer time someone's behaviour, and respond to it? We can achieve an anticipatory system that responds to what is going to happen. So a system that really knows what is going on and will react, as well as a system that is understood and accepted by the user (no surprises). The user is in the middle. The user, who is particularly interested in what we can do with the technology, in the functionality and even more in the experience, and not so much in the technology itself.

Research on intelligence and interaction
Responding or intervening environments always involve applications. The working environment with attention to safe, fun and healthy working is the application area where the research group ambient intelligence is focused on. Read more about our application areas.

With respect to safety and security as well as quality of life, the research group identified important challenges. The research of the group focuses on intelligence and interaction. Read more about our research lines. Read more about our current research projects.

For the associated study programs our research has a stimulated spin-off. More about this study programs.

Partnerships
The research group on ambient intelligence is working closely together with the companies ThalesAlten PTS and Luminis, who provide in-kind support and contribute to the education. The many other contacts with the regional business partners ensure a demand-driven research. The group maintains close links with the regional research institutes University of Twente, Novayand Roessingh Research and Development, and participates in the initiatives around IIP sensor networks, Devlab, Point One and Domotics and Smart Living.
