Biography Hans Schaffers

Hans Schaffers, professor Ambient Intelligence, SaxionSince June 2015 dr. ir. Hans Schaffers has been employed as a professor Digital Business Innovation at the research group Ambient Intelligence of Saxion’s School of Creative Technology. He studied Chemical Engineering (cum laude) and obtained his PhD in the field of computer-aided planning of water systems at the University of Twente. After that Schaffers acquired extensive research and practical experience in the field of financing and financial management (Erasmus University Rotterdam), planning and strategy (PTT Post), technology foresight and innovation policy studies (TNO) and the application of information and communication technologies, particularly in future workspaces (Telematica Institute). Since 2006 he is affiliatied as visiting professor and research director at the Centre for Knowledge and Innovation Research (CKIR) of Aalto University School of Business in Helsinki, Finland. In European framework programmes Schaffers has been the coordinator of various research and innovation projects in the area of context awareness, living labs and regional innovation, smart cities, and (currently) Future Internet. His main interest is to develop a multi-disciplinary, user-oriented and responsible approach for the development of intelligent applications in an increasingly connected world, with a focus on technical, human and social issues.

At the research group Ambient Intelligence at Saxion Hans Schaffers works on the development and transfer of knowledge and methodologies in the field of engineering 'smart' applications and systems, with a primarily focus on the areas of smart cities and smart industry. He aims for the development of projects in Horizon2020 and the further development and expansion of the international knowledge and research network of his research group. He will also work on intensifying the link between research and undergraduate education, especially in Saxion's ICT-studies.
