Biography Jan Laarhuis

Jan Laarhuis (1963) studied at the Royal Military Academy in Breda and next at the University of Twente, where he graduated in Electrical Engineering (1989). For a short time afterwards he worked as a researcher in the field of integrated optics at the Dr . Neher Laboratory.

After this he started his PhD at the University of Twente. In 1995 he obtained his doctorate with his dissertation on ‘Multichannel Interconnection in All - Optical Networks’. After this he was a senior researcher at KPN Research and TNO Telecom. In July 2004 he joined Thales, where he first worked as a radar engineer, later as a system engineer for Combat Management Systems, and since 2009 as an innovation manager. In the latter role he mainly worked on new system concepts for network centric operating at sea (with this different platforms (mostly naval or coastguard vessels) can operate as one fleet unit because they are mutually connected to a wireless network). Since May 2013 Jan Laarhuis also is a professor at Saxion's research group Ambient Intelligence, for one day a week. In this role he is, among other things, engaged in the Safety at the workplace project.
