Mekong Salt Lab
The Mekong Delta in Vietnam is a critical agricultural region facing severe threats from salinity due to rising sea levels, groundwater extraction, and prolonged droughts. These factors result in saltwater intrusion, which contaminates soil and water sources, leading to crop failures, fish deaths, and freshwater shortages, causing significant economic and social damage.
To address this issue, a consortium of Dutch and Vietnamese partners developed the Mekong Salt Lab, an innovative center of expertise aimed at supporting farmers in adapting to salinity. The project is focused on delivering practical, affordable salinity adaptation services through a farmer-driven model that integrates public and private sector resources, such as hydroponics, freshwater collection & retention, (waste)water treatment, constructed wetlands, and training programs.
