Autonomous navigation has already been developed at many universities. However, it has not yet come to large-scale application. The first questions about commercial applications of navigating robots are now also emerging within SMEs.

Commercial applications of navigating robots include:

  • Application in care robots (navigating indoors);
  • Fighting robots from fire brigade (navigate in burning parking garages);
  • Innovative agriculture (autonomous tractors or collaborative ground & air robots).

project goal

The aim of the project is to investigate the industrial applicability of the current state of the art of SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) and path planning. We will resolve the identified shortcomings where possible or propose conceptual solutions. Technical questions that require a solution include the speed / efficiency and accuracy of the mapping, robustness, handling of walls (glass, steel, concrete, wood), handling outdoor light / office light and various surfaces, obstacles and irregularities. The aim is to develop a proof-of-concept together with students as a demonstrable demonstration of the technology in a real use case.

Research outcome

The company Bolidt develops, produces and installs thermosetting plastic materials and specializes in the laying of cast floors in large spaces (parking garages, ship decks and office buildings). Together with project partner Demcon, we are conducting a feasibility study into autonomously navigating robots for their business process.
