Bang Duong loves intercultural communication

Bang Duong (also called Nancy) is a 19 year-old student from Vietnam. "I decided to study in the Netherlands because its quality of education is highly appreciated and because it offers attractive scholarships for international students. Moreover, I was impressed that 95% of the Dutch can speak English, which means communication would not be a worrying problem. And above all, I believed that my characteristics quite fit with the Dutch."

"I did not participate in any orientation activities to find this study, but I spent my time searching information on the Internet through Saxion websites and Facebook groups. I picked the IHRM programme, because I want to study something that relates to human. To be specific, I perceived HRM as a really interesting job, and challenging indeed. Not only having expertise to recruit the most suitable applicants for vacant jobs, HR people also need to know how to attract and retain the potential employees for the organization. And I believed that studying IHRM program was a right choice for my promising future career."

I always try my best to get out of my comfort zone and never stop finding opportunities to be a better version of me."

Intercultural communication

"My favourite class is intercultural communication. In my opinion, it was a best preparation for my first-year study and also my future as IHRM manager. As the name describes itself, this subject gives me the idea that cultures of each countries are different through many models. It widens my vision and affects my own perspective. The more I know about their cultures, the more I can empathize with them, instead of judging. Thanks to this subject, our class understands more each other, and our intimacy is improved day-by-day."

"International and comparative labour law is the class that I found difficult since I have never dealt with many sources of law in English before. Every week we work in groups to solve cases by legal arguments. After all, I am happy that I had a chance to gain more knowledge about labour law, which is definitely essential for my future career."

"The most memorable project is a group report of the class Introduction to People and Labor. We formed groups of three to four students and wrote a report about ten perspectives of work fitting to chosen countries, by reading the book ‘The thought of work’ (John W. Budd, 2010). Moreover, each member had to come up with another perspective by themselves. I guess that the report was a real work load for all groups. Besides a group report, we also had to do a presentation, which was a way that we can learn from each other and gain more knowledge. The subject draws on the idea that people with different perspectives of work need to be motivated in different ways. Money can be a drive for people who perceive work as disutility, something done for money to support one’s life. But money can mean nothing for people who have a perspective that work is a form of personal fulfilment."

My slogan in life: "I do not want to be a big fish in a small pool, I want to be a big fish in an ocean."
