Course content

Interest in the Circular Economy is growing rapidly within businesses and the government. Everyone understands that we will have to work together on more sustainable solutions in the field of material and energy use. But how does a Circular Economy work and which principles are needed? How do we set up our revenue models? How do we prevent materials from losing their value and being thrown away? What can you do yourself?

There are often many technical or creative solutions available for more sustainability within businesses. In this minor, we focus on the actual organization and implementation of those solutions, and on organizing the associated value creation. Together with entrepreneurs, you will develop a circular business model, in which you can immediately put the theory learned into practice. This requires creativity, affinity with sustainability, entrepreneurship and perseverance. Take on the challenge with us.

Curious about the Circular Economy? Do you also think that we should not only talk about sustainability and a Circular Economy, but should just do it? Then sign up for this minor and ensure that you are ready for a sustainable future.

This minor consists of 4 major parts (1 and 2 in the first quartile, 3 and 4 in the second quartile):

  1. Introduction: What is the Circular Economy and why does it matter? Which Circular dream and value proposition fits?
  2. Business models for the Circular Economy, materials, material cycles and parties, Circular principles and core activities: the 10 Re’s
  3. Results, impact, indicators, value creation and revenue models.
  4. Organization, preconditions, implementation of your advice.

During the minor, these four components are applied to a consultancy assignment with a real entrepreneur with a specific challenge, from the selection offered or suggested by yourself. In the second week you will, together with other students in teams of 3 or 4, start working on a company that is of interest to you for which you want to make the consultancy assignment. There are also various excursions and external activities such as a conference or event.

Classes are on three days each week. The default location is Enschede. Deventer may be considered on request if there are enough applicants for this location. There is a block of four hours on each day of classes. The lessons are a mix of theory and challenging assignments and workshops to get started with the theory and consultancy assignment in a practical way. The minor is concluded with a festive market where all the results are presented.

The assessment for this minor consists of the following components:

  • Written, individual, test on the basic principles of the circular economy and circular business models based on multiple choice questions. This test is taken at the end of the minor. Extent of knowledge test: 5 EC.
  • A written advice report for your client. You work out this assignment in teams. The substantive assessment will take place by the supervising lecturers on the basis of pre-prepared and insightful rubrics. You will also make a poster together to make clear at a glance what your advice entails. Extent of consultancy assignment, report and poster: 20 EC.
  • You present your advisory report orally to the entrepreneur. You and your team, supported by a masterclass, make a flashing video pitch and hand it in. In addition, you individually write a personal reflection in the form of a short essay. Extent of video pitch and essay combined: 5 EC.

Attendance at classes is compulsory and part of the program. In principle, all lessons are physically and on location. There is always the option of taking classes online when physical presence is not possible due to corona.

The minor is accessible to all students. Due to the structure of the material and the available accessible literature (including the book Organizing for Sustainability – A Guide to Developing New Business Models by Jan Jonker and Niels Faber (2020) and the accompanying MOOC Organizing for Sustainability (mooc.saxion.nl) no specific prior knowledge is required to be able to take part in this minor. We have a maximum of 30 places per location (Enschede and Deventer).
